Topic of the project: Encourage social inclusion and equal opportunities in sport

Sports play a vital role in European societies, as they not only contribute to the health and well-being of people but also have a strong social impact. Among the different nations, Cycling seem to be one of the most popular sports in Europe and a tool also for social inclusion. More, amateur Cycling is green, healthy and cheap and it can be practiced by everyone, from children to elderlies and have a great role also for social inclusion. Cycling in fact is a means of transport accessible to the vast majority of people, and thus they help to reduce social imbalances.

In spite of all this benefits, Cycling is still underused in many cities, and its effectiveness in term of social inclusion and well being is too often undervalued and there are still significant differences between Member States’ cycling culture.

The Bike Encounters Project was create to respond to these needs and is articulated in 3 different aims and output:

  • Promote amateur cycling sport practice, through a research concerning the state of art of amateur cycling sport is the consortium countries.
  • Promotion of amateur cycling sport as a way of social inclusion and social tourism, collecting and sharing good practices about amateur cycling as social inclusion and social tourism in the partner countries.
  • Promotion of cultural and historical heritage, creating social cycle touring routes in the partner countries to promote the value of each country’s typical landscape, historical and cultural heritage and to create alternative and sustainable tourist itineraries.

It will be created a open Portal BikE, which have the main aim to disseminate the materials produced and made them available for everyone as open educational resources.

By sharing experiences, know-how and good practices between project’s partners about social inclusion, social tourism, cooperation and the importance to practice physical activities it will be possible to promote a new model of Amateur Cycling, in line with EU policies.
